A Message from the Mayor of Loris
A little over one hundred years ago, in 1887, the Patterson Family sold a lot for $1.00 for a depot to be built along side the railroad track that had just been laid through their cornfield. Little did James Patterson realize that the lot he sold for one dollar would sit today in the heart of a thriving community. On July 26, 1902, Loris was incorporated.
From that beginning of one family, Loris has grown to a population of over 2100 within the corporate limits. However, its service area ranges anywhere from 30,000-50,000. We are fortunate to have a thriving agricultural, business, educational, medical, cultural and religious community.
Only in a town where the words, "I CAN" are taken seriously could a community the size of Loris boast: a state of the art medical facility with a staff including orthopedic surgeons, internists, urologists just to name a few, and an extended care facility that provides care with utmost dignity for our senior citizens; a fitness center; six financial institutions; a solid industrial base that is experiencing dynamic growth; and, our very own festival – The Loris Bog-Off Festival – celebrating the Low-Country dish of chicken and rice. Last year's 25th annual festival drew record crowds estimated by some at 10,000-20,000 and was recognized as the recipient of the Governor's Award on Tourism for Towns Under 5,000!
All of these accomplishments in Loris would not have been possible if its citizens had said, "we can't." Together, the members of the Loris family have worked hard singularly and corporately believing that, "WE CAN."
The City Council and I feel strongly about the service we provide to our community. Summed up,
The service we render to others is really the rent we pay for our room on this earth. It is obvious that man is, himself, a traveler; that, the purpose of this world is not "to have and to hold" but "to give and to serve." There can be no other meaning.”
